Spanish seaman gave the American Alligator its name. They presumably had no knowledge of crocodiles in other parts of the world, and when they first saw the alligators in the American rivers, they spoke of them as lizards, 'el largarto' in Spanish. English sailors adapted the name making it one world 'allagarter' which was further adapted to alligator.
