State, War, and Treasury

It's hard to imagine a time when the Departments of State and Defense shared a building– even one as big as this.

This building was called "the ugliest building in America" by Mark Twain, and a "monstrosity" by Harry S Truman. It was known for years as the Old Executive Office Building; it was re-dedicated in 2002 as the Dwight D. Eisenhower Executive Office Building.

This building, as the caption describes, is as the national treasury should be: sturdy and reliable.

And it still houses the Treasury.
