Aerial View of Winston Salem, ca. 1930's

This is downtown Winston-Salem, North Carolina, sometime after 1930.

The Empire Statish looking building in the middle is the R.J. Reynolds Building, completed in 1929 to serve as the new headquarters of the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company.

The building has served as an icon for Winston-Salem for three quarters of a century. While no longer the tallest building in Winston-Salem, it is still by far the most interesting. An excellent example of Art Deco skyscraper design, it is even more closely related to its New York City cousins of the same era and style than you might think.

This postcard collection will take a closer look at the R.J. Reynolds Building, as well as a few other downtown Winston-Salem landmarks.

Let's head down Fourth Street on our way to the RJR Building...
