The Atlantic Coast Line's Florida Special was yet another New York to Florida train that claimed to be the best of the sunshine express streamliners. According to the back of this postcard, the Florida Special "offers new equipment and the fastest time from New York to St. Petersburg in railroad history."
I think the most interesting thing about this post card is not the train, however. It is that upstart form of fast long distance transit– the airplane.
Consider this statement from the back of the post card: "Both the Atlantic Coast Line and Seaboard Air Line have terminals in St. Petersburg connecting this city with all principle terminals of the North and East."
Yessiree, we have the fastest trains around– in railroad history, even. And if that's still not fast enough for you, sport– why just hop on one of our planes. Sure, they're a lot more cramped, and there's no club car, but the pretty stewardess will still bring you a drink. And you'll never have to take the train again.
And they didn't.
